Munnar, one of the most popular hill stations in India is situated at the confluence of three mountain streams - Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. Located at 1600 m above sea level, this was once the summer resort of the erstwhile British Government in South India. Sprawling tea plantations, picture book towns, winding lanes, trekking and holiday facilities make Munnar a unique experience.
Rajamala Wildlife Sanctuary: Rajamala Wildlife Sanctuary, located 15kms from Munnar is the natural habitat of Nilgiri Tahr. Half the world population of the rare mountain goat is concentrated in this region. The animal is fast becoming extinct. The sanctuary is a part of the Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, and visitors are allowed only to the tourism area in the Rajamala region. The Nilgiri Tahrs are now reduced to small herds found in Eravikulam-Rajamala region. The total number of Nilgiri Tahrs in Rajamala is estimated at 1317.
Mattupatti Hill Station (13 km from Munnar):
Situated at a height of 1700 m, Mattupatti is famous for its highly specialized dairy farm, the Indo-Swiss live stock project. Over 100 varieties of high yielding cattle are reared here. Visitors are allowed into three of the eleven cattle sheds at the farm. The Mattupatti Lake and dam, just a short distance from the farm, is a very beautiful picnic spot.
Attukal Waterfalls (9 km from Munnar): A panorama of waterfalls and rolling hills, Attukal, located between Munnar and Pallivasal, is
a feast for the eyes. The place is also ideal for long treks.
Lock Heart Gap (13 km from Munnar): This is an ideal place for adventure tourism and trekking. The fresh mountain air, the mist-clad hills and panoramic view make it worth a visit.
Anayirangal (22 km from Munnar):
It's a lush green carpet of tea plants. A trip on the splendid reservoir is an unforgettable experience. The Anayirangal dam is surrounded by Tata Tea plantations and evergreen forests. An ideal picnic spot.
Top Station (32 km from Munnar)
1700m above sea level, this is the highest point on the Munnar-Kodaikanal road. The rare Neelakurunji (Strobilanthus) belongs to this region. Top Station also offers a panoramic view of neighboring state of Tamilnadu.
To Get to Munnar By Air: The nearest airport to Munnar is at Ernakulam, Kochi, which is about 140kms away. By Rail: The nearest Railhead is also at Kochi. There are numerous trains that connect Kochi with other important cities in India. By Road: Munnar is well connected by road, the distance from Kottayam it is 147kms, 110kms from Thekkady, 160kms from Madurai and 158kms from Thrissur.
Climate: The climate in Munnar is pleasant throughout the year. Summer is between April and June while winters from November to February are cool.
